Bloomington Public Schools is seeking elementary literacy tutors through the Americorps program Minnesota Reading Corps, which provides the district with full- and part-time tutors.
In pre-K programs, literacy tutors will help children ages 3-5 develop early reading skills in preparation for kindergarten and help ensure they are on track to read by the end of third grade. Elementary tutors help students become successful readers by implementing research-based literacy strategies.
The program has led to positive results in Bloomington. Kindergarten students served by Minnesota Reading Corps volunteers have shown significantly higher growth in literacy compared to a control group of students matched on prior literacy skills and student demographic characteristics, according to Dr. Dave Heistad, executive director of research, evaluation and assessment.
Full-time literacy tutors must commit to 11 months of service beginning in August 2018. Tutors will receive training in instruction methods and earn a living allowance, as well as up to $5,815 to pay for school or student loans. Part-time positions are also available.
