What is EL?
EL (English Language) is a program of instruction in the English language in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is intended as an academic support program for those students who have learned a language other than English or another language is spoken at home. The EL students are in regular Westwood grade level classrooms for most of the day. They come to the EL classroom for 30 minutes daily for specific, small-group language instruction. The EL teacher will also go into the classrooms to provide extra support.
The presence of an EL program at Westwood Elementary provides an opportunity for Westwood students to meet, greet, and learn with students from all around the world. Coming from more than ten different cultural groups, including more than ten different languages and dialects; the current EL students are representatives of various cultures from Asia, Europe, Africa, Mexico, and Central America.
Westwood students and their families have a wonderful opportunity to form friendships and learn about many cultures from all around the world.
